Starting Out at Pecan

This being my first job, I didn’t know what to expect!

I started at Pecan Charity in August 2021 as part of the government *Kickstart Scheme, fulfilling the role of an Admin Assistant for Southwark Foodbank.

I was 19 and had finished my education and didn’t know which path I was going to go down. That changed after I went on Universal Credit and found out about the Kickstart Scheme. Choosing to become an Admin Assistant through the Kickstart Scheme was my first professional role and it was one of the best things I had ever done for myself.

This being my first job, I didn’t know what to expect. I had many questions for example, was I going to fit in and was I even good enough? This couldn’t have been more wrong! I was able to expand on my admin skills, gain new skills, make friends, be part of a work family, give back to my community and overall, find out what I am capable of as a person.

If I hadn’t taken the opportunity to work for Pecan, I wouldn’t have had a massive change in my career. Gaining the knowledge and experience of working opened another door – I became a receptionist for Pecan. Progression is always important no matter what you do and for me, experiencing this has given me the resources I can use now and in my future.
