Welcome

Welcome to our Autumn newsletter. We hope you had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the several continuous sunny days in August.

Over the coming months look out for Pecan’s services at the Peckham Festival 2024 and our Southwark Foodbank Tesco Collection on 12-13 September, at the Old Kent Road branch. Plus, we will be holding a MacMillan Coffee Morning in our Together Café on 27 September and marking Black History Month in October, including a collaboration again with Bold Tendencies.

Unfortunately, during the summer we also witnessed some disturbing riots in the news, which had a big impact on many communities around the country.  Our CEO Peter Edwards, gives us his thoughts on that time:

The sense of community is frequently praised but very difficult to define. The riots across the UK this summer shocked us all but the reaction underlined the togetherness that binds together different ages, races and faiths.

‘Pecan is just one part of community life in Southwark – a borough that can attest to its own struggles but one with a proud history of giving time, money and energy to tackle inequality and discrimination.’

While the outbursts of violence, intimidation and bigotry were initially directed at particular groups – including Mosques, migrants and asylum seekers – they quickly spread to shops, the police and the media. A ragtag collection of agitators were united in disgrace as they exploited the horrific killing of three girls at a dance event in Southport.

What prompted hope, however, was the reaction of many more to the rioting: the neighbours and community groups which united to repair the damage to places of worship and donate money towards rebuilding broken buildings and shattered hearts.

The disorder appears now to have been quelled and Southwark’s streets remain largely unaffected. The painful memory of the mindless disorder seen elsewhere will, I hope, serve to underline the value of community. The social fabric includes charities, yes, but also faith groups, campaigners, small businesses and locally-rooted arms of the state councils, neighbourhood police and the NHS.

Pecan is just one part of community life in Southwark – a borough that can attest to its own struggles but one with a proud history of giving time, money and energy to tackle inequality and discrimination.

After reflecting on the riots, I am still no nearer to landing on a single definition of ‘community’. Perhaps – like you – I simply know it when I see it. I hope recent events redouble our resolve to help our neighbour.

Peter Edwards,
CEO at Pecan

The Importance of Trustees

At Pecan we are very proud and thankful to our trustees giving their time to support our projects that help those in our community in challenging social situations. Charity trustees are volunteers who play an important role in ensuring their charity is run in the interests of the people it supports. They strategically oversee the management and administration of the organisation.

At Pecan we are currently seeking a Chair of Trustees, and if you believe in our work and values, with experience of governance then please apply: Pecan Chair of Trustee vacancy

Summer Highlights

Miatta Fahnbulleh'svisit to Pecan

L to R: Doreen (Women’s Services) and Mark (Employment Support) with Miatta, and some members of the Pantry team.

In August we had the pleasure of welcoming Miatta Fahnbulleh MP for Peckham to Pecan. We congratulated her on her new position and had some engaging conversations about our food and women services, community, employment support and Guarantee Our Essentials campaign.

After a short walk from Pecan to the Pantry, the Pantry team were ready to welcome Miatta. It was a great chance to talk about how the Pantry is an important service for our community, particularly during the cost-of-living crisis. Temi, the Pantry manager gave a great overview of the food and household items that can be found in the shop, community projects and the work our engagement officer Flora does with the community. So, a big thank you to Miatta Fahnbulleh MP and her team member Samuel Spong for coming to visit us so early in her new position.

Peckham Perspective

‘a kaleidoscope of perspectives that capture the heart of the neighborhood.’

– Michelle Dwyer

On Thursday 15 August Michelle Dwyer’s exhibition ‘Peckham Perspective’ opened at Peckham Arches, and it was amazing. The exhibition was a celebration of the voices of Peckham in the form of letterpress printed posters.

During the exhibition, we held a Together Coffee morning at the venue, as this gave our members a chance to enjoy seeing the show, spotting their quotes and a chance to meet new people. Staff too enjoyed visiting and taking photos of this colourful and immersive exhibition.

Michelle has been collaborating with Pecan since 2023 and earlier in the year we hosted one of her community letterpress workshops. So, we are thankful that she has promoted us via her show and is donating 50% of sales to Pecan.

‘Hi, I am one of the new caseworkers in the Employment Support team.

Our aim is to help long-term unemployed people back into work. We do this by adopting a person-centred approach when working with our clients. Today’s job market is so diverse that we aim to provide support into work through training, apprenticeships and reviewing a person’s skills and qualifications to see where they fit int the job market.

I am a firm believer that there are jobs for everyone, some individuals just need support to fine tune their skillsets.’
