Support during the summer

Welcome to our bumper summer edition of our newsletter covering both August and September!

We know that with the cost-of-living crisis impacting across the nation, the summer months can be difficult, especially for families, so we are dedicating this edition to all things summer: what we are doing, what is going on in the community and what support is out there to get you through the summer months.

Pecan’s doors will be open with services running as normal, so read on to find out more about what will be happening at Peckham Pantry, Southwark & Lewisham’s Women’s Service, Employment Support, Southwark Foodbank and HOurbank.

TOP TIP

Keep hydrated in the hot weather by drinking lots of water. You can use Refill.Orgs app to find refill stations all around London so you can fill up for free.

Peckham Pantry

Special Offers and  Healthy Start Cards

As summer is here it is important to remember that the Pantry is here to help make your money go further, especially when schools are closed. At the Pantry, from time to time we are fortunate to be able to offer shoppers free items, such as salad packs and lettuce to certain vegetables. So make sure you shop regularly, and also after 8 shops the 9th is FREE, but don’t forget to bring your membership card.

If you regularly shop at the Pantry, not only do you benefit from buying £15 or more worth of food at the price of £4.50, but you can also use the Healthy Start card. The paper voucher is being phased out and a prepaid card introduced. This card will be automatically topped up every 4 weeks with your payment.

Have a good summer and see you at the Pantry.

Members Update!

Our members split into two groups for their July Oyster Day. One group had a lovely walk in Peckham Rye while the other group relaxed in the local café Criterion and had lunch. A perfect way to start the summer.

The Tuesday café and Thursday reading/discussion group are now on a summer break until September, but the Oyster Days continue.

The HOurBank Oyster Day programme:

  • August Oyster Day | 26 August: A visit to Sky Gardens on Friday 26 August, the previous trip proved extremely popular, so some members wanted to visit the Gardens again.
  • September Oyster Days | 2 September: A Day trip to Brighton seaside on Friday 2 September and up to 20 members can travel by train to Brighton for the day out. There will be something for everyone to enjoy including the beach, gardens to stroll through, shopping in the Lanes, and Brighton Pier.
PLEASE NOTE: For the Brighton trip, a £10 non-refundable deposit towards train travel cost is required.
  • A Special Oyster Day | 6 September: A Tour of Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 6 September, when members will get a chance to see furnished rooms and artworks in Buckingham Palace.

If you would like to enjoy a day out with members of the HOurBank community and to  join, then contact us for more information.

A Pecan Summer Reflection

Poem by Josh, Employment Service

As the seasons change
Situations may change as well
We are still Pecan.

We show kindness
The kind of kindness that doesn’t end at a CV,
Advocacy, the Pantry or even a Food parcel delivery.

But the kind that reaches out, extending infinitely
We are still Pecan
We show belief.

And believe you me there are trials and tribulations
that test us constantly.

Because before the success story, there’s the struggle,
the recovery, the question of if we’ve done all we can
We are still Pecan.

We show hope
And hopefully,
What we do is enough.
