Members Newsletter | Issue 11

Welcome to Peckham Pantry’s March 2024 Newsletter!

This month the Pantry celebrated being a partner and social supermarket with City Harvest London. A fabulous film was commissioned by the team at City Harvest London to highlight redefining the ways communities come together to tackle food insecurity and food waste.

Don’t forget to spread the word about Peckham Pantry at Peckham Park Road and St.Luke’s Chandler Way – membership is £4.50 for a shop worth £15 or more.

Don’t forget…

To support our pantry and support the value it brings to many, please consider donating to the pantry via the Bankuet QR code or link. The Pantry is able to provide affordable food shops for their members because of the kindness and generosity of volunteers and donors.

Ambassadors of the Month:

Steph

Hi, I’m Steph and I’ve been volunteering at the Peckham Pantry for approximately 2 years now.  I put in a 4 hour shift every other week.

The Peckham Pantry is a good, worthwhile project and much needed in these current times of high prices and inflation.  I have previously volunteered at another food project during ‘lockdown’

and although this project still runs, I prefer to give my time to the Pantry as it operates differently. Customers can choose what food they want with dignity. The staff are friendly and helpful, many are volunteers like myself – we are made up of part-time workers, freelancers, self-employed and people who understand and care.

I enjoy working with the public and giving back to the community, which I found invaluable during those very isolating years of lockdown and little work. There is a good atmosphere here at Peckham Pantry; staff and customers are generally happy (who doesn’t appreciate being able to buy affordable food) which ranges from fruit and veg, standard tins of tomatoes, beans and other store cupboard staples, to some high-quality organic produce, sometimes even bunches of flowers.

As a regular customer said: “all the better for being here”

Sandra

I’m Sandra, and I’m pleased to be featured as an ambassador this month.

I have been a volunteer at The Pantry since October 2022, working two Saturdays each month. Volunteering at The Panty is a fantastic way of giving back and supporting the local community. It provides those most at risk of food poverty access to healthy food, in a welcoming, warm, and friendly environment.

When I arrived the staff was really friendly and me and my friend signed up to become a member and also was given a leaflet about volunteering, it was then that I knew this was the place where I could see myself in a customer facing environment, which also allows me to put back into the community. I’ve been volunteering for nearly 2 years now, doing one day a week. I really enjoy meeting different people and also the things you learn is so priceless, wonderful members and staff and a great place to be.

Engagement Group/Coffee Morning

Peckham Pantry Steering Group is a group of pantry members, volunteers and staff who meet once a month to develop ideas on how to engage with pantry members and members of the wider local community.

You may have spotted our new bookshelf at Peckham Pantry on Peckham Park Road. This came about from an idea within our steering group, thanks to our dedicated member Laura Jane, who organised the bookshelf and children’s books. Stay tuned for further projects we’re working on and share your ideas with us!

Next Meeting

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 23 April 9.30-10.30am, and meetings take place at Pecan with the option to join online. If you would like to join our Steering Group, attend the next meeting, or just share an idea for Peckham Pantry, please contact Flora on 07929 999 006.

Or just pop by our next Peckham Pantry Coffee Morning on Thursday 25 April from 10.30-11.30am at Peckham Park Road to join us for a cuppa and a chat!
