Wellbeing in Peckham

Meet Rose Morgan, Community Champion and Friend of Pecan

In this blogwe’re delighted to shine a light on Rose Morgan, Community Champion at Morrisons Peckham and a long-time friend of Pecan. Rose’s warmth, kindness and passion for people shine through in everything she does. For her, community is all about connection, belonging and helping others feel seen and supported.

“I just want to make people happy and make our community stronger,” Rose says.

Building Relationships in the Community

Rose first connected with Pecan in 2014 when the Morrisons Foundation donated to Pecan. As part of her role she wanted to understand more about the people behind the organisations Morrisons supported, so naturally she began building relationships with us and learning about Pecan’s work in the community. “Over the years, Pecan has evolved so much, like many organisations in Peckham and Southwark. It’s been inspiring to see,” Rose shares.

“What touches me most is Pecan’s humility. We are all vulnerable at times, and that kindness really matters.” Although Rose originally joined Morrisons on a short-term contract, she says becoming a Community Champion now feels like it was meant to be. “When they suggested this role I thought; this role is made for me! I love helping people. It’s just in my nature. It has been so lovely, because I get to meet wonderful people every day. I feel honoured doing this work as a Community Champion, as it is also wellbeing in the community.”

Planting Seeds of Hope

‘During lockdown, Rose created the “Seed of Hope” project to support people’s wellbeing during a difficult and uncertain time. “Those days were really hard for many people,” she says. “I wrote to our former CEO asking if we could give away seed packets in Peckham as a symbol of growth and hope after COVID.”

I think the CEO liked the idea as my request quickly evolved into something much bigger, becoming a national Morrisons campaign, with seed packets distributed nationally.”

What Community Means to Rose

For Rose, the word community starts with recognising our shared humanity.

“When I think about the word community, I think about me – and I am part of the community like everyone else. If I’m important, then so are you.”

Rose also values the online communities she has built through LinkedIn and Facebook, where she regularly shares messages of encouragement and positivity. “As people who follow me know, I LOVE USING CAPS!” she laughs. “My children tease me about it, but writing in capitals helps me because I’m dyslexic. The CAPS helps me re-read what I have written – not sure why, but it does. I used to hide my dyslexia, but writing in CAPS online has helped me overcome this and sharing this information has been positive. My online community has been great too.
