Volunteer receptionist, Irene, explains how she got involved with Pecan and why she loves volunteering.

How did you first get involved with Pecan?

When I moved to London, I knew God had a plan for me to work with people. I applied to a few jobs around the city, but a friend in my church told me about a new project opening in Pecan and I was certain this was where God was leading me. When I was made redundant I continued with Pecan as a volunteer on reception.

What does being on reception entail?

Quite a lot more than people think it does! I am often answering the phone, taking messages and dealing with clients inquiries whilst ensuring they get to meet with the correct people. Pecan runs and has connections with a vast range of projects and people. It’s important to have knowledge of the projects Pecan runs and about the local area area because then you can advise people about other services that may be more relevant to their situation. But you will definitely pick a lot of this up along the way.

What do you enjoy about working on reception?

I love the satisfaction you have at the end of the day. It sometimes feels like a juggling act with everything that goes on, but when you have managed to keep all the balls in the air and not drop any then that is a great feeling. As a receptionist you can always bring a little light to someone’s day and it’s wonderful when clients leave feeling better.

Why would you recommend it to someone?

Lots of people volunteer on reception for different reasons. It’s great office experience and brilliant to be able to meet lots of different people. I really believe in the work that is done here, so feel privileged to continue to help.
